More Practice -- Rule #3: Evaluate your Source

When we “old folks” were growing up, we didn’t need to worry about whether information
was accurate or not. We knew that if we found the information at school, in the library,
or in a book from home, we could be pretty certain that the information was accurate.
With the Web, this is not the case. Anyone can publish on the web.  Readers must always
be aware that not everything on the Web trustworthy.

CYBER RULE #3: Evaluate your source…
Is the author/organization credible?
What is the author’s purpose?

What do others think of this source?

The other day, I found a great site about an interesting geographic feature in Minnesota. Let’s go to that site….  Mankato, Minnesota Home Page

1. Based on what you know about US geography and climate, what is typical winter weather in Minnesota?

2. What makes Mankato unique as a winter vacation spot?
3. What is the Farr/Sclare Fissure and how does it affect the Mankato climate?
As soon as you have completed these questions, raise your hand to let us know. While everyone is catching up, take some time to read the disclaimer (link is at the top of the Mankato, Minnesota home page).

On a more serious note, let’s take a look at a Holocaust web site called, “A Short Introduction to the Study of Holocaust Revisionism.” The site is part of a personal page that was developed and is maintained by a professor at Northwestern University.
Go to the site… "A Short Introduction to the Study of Holocaust Revisionism"

1.       Who is the author of this article?

2.      Read the first paragraph. What is the main idea of paragraph one?

a.       British troops found horrible piles of corpses in west German camps after WWII.

b.      The belief that millions of Jews were killed by the Germans during WWII  is faulty.

c.       There are no longer large communities of Jews in Poland.

3.      Read the second paragraph. According to Butz, what was the cause of high death rate in concentration camps?

4.      Read the remainder of the article, what was Arthur Butz’s purpose for writing the article?

5.      What is Butz’s full time job (see bottom of web page)?

6.      In your judgment, is he a credible source for information about the Holocaust? Use complete sentences and provide a basis for your judgment.
